Captain James Sedgwick
The James Sedgwick Distillery is named after Captain James Sedgwick, a pioneer of the South African liquor industry. Born in 1811, Sedgwick started his career as a midshipman with the British East India Company, eventually commanding his own ship by the age of 22. His voyages frequently brought him to Cape Town, where he met and married Mary Bush Parke in 1839. After retiring from the sea in 1850, having commanded the tea clipper Undine and participated in the famous tea races, Sedgwick opened a tavern called The Captain’s Rooms in Cape Town.
In 1859, Sedgwick founded J. Sedgwick & Co., a company that distributed liquor products including fortified wines, cigars, and tobacco. The business grew, with his sons Charles and Alfred expanding its reach. In 1886, the company acquired a distillery on the banks of the Berg River, which is where The James Sedgwick Distillery stands today.
Over the years, the distillery became renowned for producing high-quality spirits. In 1990, it became the home of the iconic Three Ships Whisky, and today it produces a range of award-winning whiskies, including Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky. The distillery has been led by only seven managers since its founding, with Andy Watts playing a crucial role in its modern success. Watts, recognised globally for his contributions, helped put South African whisky on the map, and the distillery continues to set the standard for innovation and craftsmanship.
Today, The James Sedgwick Distillery is the only commercial whisky distillery in Africa, offering tours and tastings by appointment on selected Fridays and Saturdays.
